Ingredients:
- 1 cup distilled water (or herbal tea, like chamomile)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (or sweet almond oil)
- 1/2 cup shea butter (or cocoa butter)
- 1 tablespoon beeswax (optional, for a thicker consistency)
- 10-15 drops of essential oil (optional, such as lavender or chamomile for a soothing scent)
- 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional, for added nourishment)
Equipment:
- Double boiler or a heatproof bowl over simmering water
- Whisk or hand mixer
- Glass jar or lotion pump for storage
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
Instructions:
- Prepare the Oats: simmer the oats in the water for 10 minutes. Add extra water if necessary to keep a liquid consistency. Cool and strain liquid through cheese cloth. Set aside.
- Melt the Base Ingredients: In a double boiler, combine the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax (if using). Heat over low to medium heat until melted, stirring occasionally to combine.
- Blend the Mixture: Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Gradually whisk in the cooled oatmeal liquid until fully combined. For an even smoother texture, you can use a blender at this stage to incorporate everything thoroughly.
- 5. Incorporate Essential Oils (Optional): Stir in your chosen essential oils and vitamin E oil, mixing well to ensure even distribution.
- Emulsify the Mixture: Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend the lotion for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes creamy and slightly fluffy. This will help to create a light and airy texture.
- Cool and Store: Once the mixture is well combined and has thickened, transfer it to a clean glass jar or lotion pump. Allow it to cool completely before sealing.
- Use and Enjoy: Your homemade oatmeal lotion is now ready to nourish and soothe your skin! Apply it as needed, especially to dry and sensitive areas. Store in a cool, dry place, and use within a few months.
### Tips: For a more concentrated oatmeal infusion, you can steep the oats in the water or tea for longer before straining.
