Homemade Condensed Milk

This homemade condensed milk is perfect for baking, making desserts, or adding to your favorite beverages.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

1. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the whole milk and granulated sugar. Stir well to ensure the sugar is fully dissolved.

2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Heat the mixture until it reaches a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.

3. Once it starts to simmer, reduce the heat to low. Let the milk and sugar mixture simmer gently. Stir frequently to prevent scorching. This process will take about 30-40 minutes. Keep simmering until the milk reduces by about half and thickens. The mixture should have a creamy consistency similar to syrup.

4. Once the mixture has reduced and thickened, add the butter and stir until it melts completely. If using, add the vanilla extract and mix well.

5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the condensed milk cool to room temperature. It will thicken further as it cools.

6. Transfer the condensed milk into a clean, airtight jar or container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks.

Notes:

  • Consistency: If the condensed milk seems too thick after cooling, you can thin it out by stirring in a small amount of milk.
  • Flavor Variations: You can experiment with other flavorings like almond extract or a pinch of salt for a different taste.
  • Dairy-Free Option: For a dairy-free version, you can substitute whole milk with coconut milk or any other non-dairy milk, and use a plant-based butter alternative.
