Ingredient
- pie crust (find my flaky pie crust recipe HERE)
- 6 large apples
- 6 tablespoons of butter
- 1/2 cup of white sugar (can be substituted with 1/2 cup of honey)
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- milk/egg yolks for brushing over the top
**I prefer to use Mutsu and Northern Spy apples but any hard tart apple will do
Instructions
- preheat oven to 350o
- butter a 9 inch round pie dish
- roll out half the pie crust dough and line the pie dish with it
- peel and core the apples and slice into thin slices
- add butter, sugar, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to the apples in a large bowl and thoroughly combine
- place mixture into pie dish
- roll out second half of pie crust dough and lay over the top
- pinch the edges together and cut a design on the top
- use a basting brush to brush milk and/or egg yolks over the top, milk will be lighter, egg yolks darker. You can sprinkle granulated sugar or cinnamon on the top too. Get creative!
- Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top

**using a metal crust protector or aluminum foil around the edges will keep the edges from getting overcooked
