German Chocolate Cake

The Cake

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup dark sweet chocolate
  • 2 1/2 cup white cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 4 eggs (separated)
  • whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. grease 2 8in round baking pans
  2. melt the chocolate over low heat
  3. cream the butter with the sugar
  4. add egg yolks
  5. heat the water in a separate pot to boiling
  6. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking soda, and salt
  7. add the melted chocolate to the butter, sugar and eggs
  8. add the flour mixture alternately with the milk, mixing only enough to combine
  9. add the vanilla
  10. beat the egg whites until it has stiff peaks and gently fold into batter only to combined
  11. add the boiling water, mix only to combined
  12. bake at 350o for 15 minutes until toothpick test clean

The Frosting

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup coconut flakes
  • 1 cup pecans (chopped)

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients except coconut and pecans in a pan and heat until bubbling.
  2. remove from heat and add coconut flakes and pecan
  3. cool before frosting cake
