Homemade Mouthwash

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder (or 1-2 cinnamon sticks)
  • 1 teaspoon clove powder (or 4-5 whole cloves)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (optional, for extra whitening)
  • 1 tablespoon peppermint extract (for flavor and freshness)
  • 1 tablespoon propolis extract (liquid form)
  • 5-10 drops of tea tree oil (optional, for additional antimicrobial properties)

Instructions:

1. If using cinnamon sticks and whole cloves, bring the distilled water to a boil in a small saucepan. Add the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves to the boiling water. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes to extract the flavors and benefits of the spices. If using powdered spices, simply add them to the distilled water in a mixing bowl.

2. After simmering, remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool to room temperature. If you used whole spices, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids.

3. In a mixing bowl or jar, combine the cooled cinnamon and clove infusion (or water with powdered spices) with baking soda, peppermint extract, and propolis extract. Stir well to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

4. Transfer the mouthwash into a clean, airtight bottle or jar. Use a dark glass container if possible, to protect the ingredients from light.

5. Shake well before each use. Swish a small amount (about 1-2 tablespoons) in your mouth for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then spit it out. Do not swallow. Use it after brushing your teeth for added freshness.

6. Store the mouthwash in a cool, dark place. It should last for up to two weeks. If you notice any changes in smell or appearance, discard it and make a new batch.

Notes:

  • Propolis has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great addition to your mouthwash.
  • Always consult with a dentist or healthcare professional before trying homemade oral care recipes, especially if you have any dental or health conditions.
  • Adjust the flavor according to your preferences by varying the amount of peppermint extract. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately.
  • Add goldenseal powder to aid with infection
