Soft Pretzels

These soft pretzels are warm, chewy, and perfectly salted, making them an irresistible snack that’s great for any occasion. Fun to make and delicious to eat, they are perfect for dipping in mustard or cheese sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar; let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture; mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
6. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil.
7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces; roll each piece into a long rope and shape into a pretzel.
8. Carefully boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
9. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
10. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
