Masa Harina Tortillas

Masa harina tortillas are a staple in Mexican cuisine, known for their delicious flavor and versatile use in a variety of dishes. Made from masa harina, a special corn flour treated with lime, these tortillas are soft, pliable, and perfect for wrapping around fillings or serving as a base for tacos, enchiladas, or quesadillas. Making masa harina tortillas at home is simple and rewarding, allowing you to enjoy fresh, warm tortillas that elevate any meal.

Ingredients:
• 2 cups masa harina
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/4 cups warm water (adjust as needed)

Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt, mixing well to ensure the salt is evenly distributed.
2. Gradually add the warm water to the masa harina, mixing with your hands or a spoon until a smooth dough forms. The dough should be soft and pliable but not sticky. If it’s too dry, add a little more water; if it’s too wet, add a bit more masa harina.
3. Divide the dough into equal portions, about the size of a golf ball (approximately 10-12 balls).
4. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
5. Place a ball of dough between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper, and flatten it using a rolling pin or a tortilla press to form a circle about 1/8 inch thick.
6. Carefully remove the tortilla from the plastic wrap and place it on the preheated skillet. Cook for about 30-45 seconds on each side, or until lightly browned and cooked through.
7. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls, stacking the cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft.
8. Serve the masa harina tortillas warm, and enjoy them with your favorite fillings or toppings!
