Fried Clams

Indulge in the crispy and flavorful goodness of fried clams, a classic seafood dish that’s perfect as an appetizer or a main course. These clams are lightly breaded and fried to golden perfection, making them a delightful treat!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh clams, shucked and cleaned (or use whole belly clams)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Tartar sauce or cocktail sauce (for dipping)

Instructions:
1. In a bowl, soak the cleaned clams in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and add flavor.
2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.
3. Heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
4. Remove the clams from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
5. Dredge the clams in the flour mixture, coating them evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
6. Working in batches, carefully add the coated clams to the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
7. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried clams and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
8. Serve the fried clams warm with lemon wedges and your choice of tartar sauce or cocktail sauce for dipping.

Enjoy these delicious fried clams as a delightful seafood snack or meal!
