Glühwein

Glühwein is a traditional German mulled wine that brings warmth and festive cheer to cold winter nights. This aromatic beverage combines red wine with a blend of spices, citrus, and sweeteners, resulting in a delightful drink that is perfect for holiday gatherings and cozy evenings by the fire. With its inviting aroma and rich flavors, glühwein is a beloved winter treat that warms the soul and creates lasting memories with friends and family!

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of dry red wine (such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 5-6 whole cloves
  • 2-3 star anise (optional)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar or honey (to taste)
  • 1 cup water (optional, for dilution)
  • Optional: brandy or rum for an extra kick

Instructions:
1. In a large pot, combine the red wine, sliced orange and lemon, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise (if using), and sugar or honey.
2. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it begins to warm, stirring gently to dissolve the sugar. Avoid boiling, as this will cook off the alcohol.
3. Allow the glühwein to simmer for about 20-30 minutes, letting the spices infuse into the wine. If you prefer a lighter drink, you can add a cup of water to dilute it slightly.
4. Taste the glühwein and adjust the sweetness by adding more sugar or honey if desired.
5. Optional: For an extra kick, add a splash of brandy or rum just before serving.
6. Strain the glühwein to remove the spices and fruit slices, if desired, and serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses. Enjoy this festive glühwein as a delightful drink that brings warmth and joy to your winter celebrations!
