Homemade Filo Dough Recipe
Filo dough, known for its delicate layers and crisp texture, is a staple in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Making your own filo dough from scratch allows you to create fresh pastries like baklava or spanakopita with a personal touch.
Ingredients
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
• 1/2 cup warm water
• Cornstarch or additional flour for dusting
Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt, stirring to mix well.
2. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the olive oil (or melted butter) and warm water.
3. Mix with a fork or your hands until a rough dough forms.
4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
5. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, shape each piece into a ball, and cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying.
6. Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes to allow the gluten to relax.
7. On a lightly floured surface, take one ball of dough and roll it out as thinly as possible, dusting with cornstarch or flour to prevent sticking.
8. Repeat with the remaining balls of dough, stacking the sheets as you go, and dusting with cornstarch or flour in between.
9. Once all the dough is rolled out, use immediately for your favorite recipes or wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to a week. Enjoy!
