Blooming Onion

Blooming Onion

The blooming onion is a spectacular appetizer that combines the irresistible crunch of fried onion with a flavorful dipping sauce. This impressive dish not only tastes great but also makes for a stunning centerpiece at any gathering, inviting everyone to dig in.

Ingredients
• 1 large onion (Vidalia or sweet onion works best)
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar)
• Oil for frying

Dipping Sauce
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise
• 1/4 cup ketchup
• 1 tablespoon horseradish (adjust to taste)
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions
1. Begin by cutting the onion from the top down to create petals, making sure to leave the root intact. Carefully separate the petals to create a blooming effect.
2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.
3. Dredge the blooming onion in the flour mixture, then dip it into the buttermilk, ensuring it is well coated. Return it to the flour mixture, coating it thoroughly again.
4. In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Carefully lower the blooming onion into the hot oil and fry for about 5-8 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
5. While the onion is frying, mix all the dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Once the onion is cooked, drain on paper towels, and serve with the dipping sauce on the side.
